The phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of quality biological specimens for laboratory testing, distribution of specimens to proper departments, and proper preparation and handling of specimens for laboratory analysis. This role involves performing invasive procedures such as venipuncture and micro-capillary collections on patients of all age groups, adhering strictly to protocols. The phlebotomist also provides superior customer service, maintaining positive patient relations and resolving customer needs. They play a role in maintaining laboratory market share through professional communication with patients, physicians, nurses, and hospital departments. Additionally, they are responsible for specimen handling, ensuring quality and timely distribution to reduce turnaround times and improve patient care. This includes preparing esoteric specimens for shipment and maintaining specimen integrity. The position also requires adherence to patient registration procedures, strict identification policies, and infection prevention practices. Competency in Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS) is necessary for tasks such as scheduling, interpreting test orders, retrieving billing information, and communicating test results confidentially. Adherence to all laboratory policies, procedures, and regulations (CLIA, CAP, OSHA) is mandatory. The role requires the ability to treat patients across all age groups, from birth to over 100 years old. Access to the medication room for pneumatic tube station use may be required. Competency in Microsoft® Windows and participation in further learning opportunities are also expected.
