About The Position

The Phlebotomist draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. Performs all pre-analytical functions. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Develops a complete understanding of specimen collection and handling in order to preserve specimen validity and integrity. Relies on established guidelines to accomplish tasks and works under close supervision. Must have excellent customer service skills. For Phlebotomist 2, this role may frequently work independently outside the main lab and may direct or lead the work of others.

  • Phlebotomy, MLA, or MA certification or license obtained within three (3) months of employment
  • Certified Phlebotomist or obtain a La. Medical Laboratory Assistant license
  • 1 year Phlebotomy Experience (for Phlebotomist 2)

Responsibilities

  • Draws and collects blood samples from patients.
  • Verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Performs all pre-analytical functions.
  • Wears appropriate PPE during sample collection and processing to ensure safe work habits and maintains a safe environment for self, co-workers, patients and visitors 100% of the time.
  • Communicates confidential information in designated areas and shares information with others on an as-needed basis.
  • Receives and accepts specimens into the Lab Information System using proper patient identification.
  • Operates laboratory centrifuge for specimen processing according to specified guidelines.
  • Performs clinical specimen and order processing functions within specified guidelines.
  • Follows procedures for the aseptic collection of samples for blood culture with less than 3% contamination rate.
  • Maintains phlebotomy areas in a sanitary and properly supplied condition.
  • Follows positive patient identification and specimen labeling with less than 2 incidents a year.
  • Properly utilizes all specimen collection devices and techniques with less than 2 incidents per year.
  • Actively participates in committees, department processes and special projects as assigned.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
