The Phlebotomist is responsible for verifying positive patient identification, assessing patient reactions to specimen procurement, and performing venipuncture and collecting other specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocols. The role also involves obtaining medical assistance when necessary, prioritizing specimen collection, ensuring completion of collection functions, and verifying proper labeling and suitability of specimens for testing. Additionally, the Phlebotomist resolves specimen identification and requisition issues, performs limited testing under CLIA guidelines, answers and screens telephone calls, assists with inventory, and maintains supplies and equipment. The position also supports billing and other business functions, accepts and sorts specimens, packages and tracks specimens for transport, and processes specimens for testing. This includes aliquoting, pre-analytical steps, and loading instruments while maintaining proper specimen identification. The Phlebotomist responds to additional specimen procurement requests, orders and verifies test requests, documents information for quality assurance, runs quality control checks, and notifies providers of stat, critical, and abnormal results. Laboratory result entry, internal and external proficiency testing, and reviewing pending and management reports are also key duties. The role may also involve instructing employees and students in phlebotomy, data entry, and specimen processing functions, and requires the ability to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
