The Phlebotomist role is within the VCH Laboratory Clinical department and involves direct patient care, specimen collection, and administrative tasks within the laboratory setting. This position serves all age groups, including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Requirements

  • Light typing skills

  • Knowledge, training, and experience in obtaining and interpreting information relevant to patient care
  • Knowledge of growth and development
  • Understanding of the range of treatments needed by patients across all age groups (neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics)
  • Fundamental awareness of Specimen Collection
  • Fundamental awareness of Quality Assurance, understanding the goal of increasing organizational productivity and individual performance by making work assignments more efficient and effective, and demonstrating quality management practices
  • Fundamental awareness of Phlebotomy
  • Novice level in Customer Service, demonstrating the ability to influence customers, verify and clarify customer needs and expectations, respond quickly and efficiently to customer service requests, participate in and conduct meetings with customers, keep customers informed of status via standard reporting techniques, meet the continuing service needs of a customer group, and respond to customers with an appropriate level of urgency, energy, persistence and tenacity
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Less than 1 year of relevant work experience

Responsibilities

  • Collecting venous and capillary whole blood specimens
  • Handling Chain of Custody urine and venous blood specimens
  • Accessioning, labeling, and procuring specimens for testing and transport
  • Registering patients and placing or deleting test orders in EMR/LIS
  • Operating the LIS (Laboratory Information System)
  • Assisting technologists and the Administrative Laboratory Director with laboratory operations as requested and where appropriate, after being checked as competent
