About The Position

This role involves collecting specimens for laboratory analysis, including blood and urine, and performing nasal swabs if needed during overnight shifts. The position requires conducting overnight rounds and early morning draws, explaining safety protocols to patients, being customer-focused, and performing clerical functions. Key responsibilities include collecting blood according to established policies and procedures, ensuring patient identification matches requisitions and labels, using proper hand hygiene, selecting appropriate collection equipment and sites, preparing for venipuncture, collecting specimens according to the order of draw, ensuring proper mixing of specimens, labeling in the presence of the patient, packaging and transporting specimens, monitoring patients post-collection, and reviewing a standard checklist for potential adverse reactions. The role also involves maintaining patient privacy and HIPAA guidelines, and with training or competency review, providing EKG, clerical, specimen transport, pediatric, and ancillary services. Additional duties include front desk reception and clerical functions at the Specimen Collection center, managing supply inventory, and completing annual continuing education and mandatory training. The position requires collaboration, teamwork, and good communication skills with co-workers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

Nice To Haves

  • Pediatric Phlebotomy experience is preferred.
  • Inpatient Phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Graduate of a training Program that includes phlebotomy skills, with demonstrated and acceptable competency in phlebotomy preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collect specimens for laboratory analysis, including blood, urine, and nasal swabs.
  • Conduct overnight rounds and early morning draws.
  • Explain safety protocols and procedures to patients.
  • Collect blood using good judgment, reasonable and prudent care, and according to policies and procedures.
  • Check two patient identifiers and ensure a complete match between requisitions, labels, and patient identification card.
  • Use hand hygiene procedures according to unit guidelines.
  • Select appropriate specimen collection equipment.
  • Select an appropriate site for blood collection.
  • Tie tourniquet and prepare site for venipuncture.
  • Collect specimen according to the order of draw.
  • Ensure adequate mixing of specimen in tube by inversion or mechanical device.
  • Label in presence of patient.
  • Package and transport specimens.
  • Monitor patient and ensure bleeding has stopped, and the patient is stable.
  • Review prior to collection a standard checklist which includes checking for potential adverse reactions such as history of fainting, and latex allergy.
  • Maintain patient privacy and follow all HIPAA guidelines.
  • Provide EKG, clerical, and specimen transport functions (with training or competency review).
  • Provide pediatric and ancillary services to phlebotomy operations (with training or competency review).
  • Provide reception and associated clerical functions at the Specimen Collection center front desk, including Fax receipt and send, filing of orders, answering telephones, and placing requisitions in the queue.
  • Maintain adequate supply inventory and complete monthly inventory checks as assigned.
  • Satisfy annual required continuing education for phlebotomists and mandatory life safety, HIPAA, and other required training.
  • Work in collaboration with and practice good teamwork and communication skills with co-workers.
