About The Position

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking a part-time Phlebotomist to support morning rounds. Located in Nashville, Tennessee, VUMC is a leading institution in patient care, education, and research, committed to an environment where everyone can thrive. The Laboratory Phlebotomist will be responsible for performing phlebotomy and EKGs on patients of all age groups, test ordering in the HIS, and ABN verification. This role may also involve training new employees.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform phlebotomy on all age groups.
  • Ability to perform EKGs according to hospital protocols.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Less than 1 year of relevant work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy on all age groups.
  • Obtain quality and usable samples consistently.
  • Ensure patients are left in satisfactory condition following venipuncture.
  • Verify patient ID using two identifiers.
  • Handle all specimens in accordance with Universal Precautions.
  • Cooperate with co-workers and other hospital departments to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Perform EKGs according to hospital protocols.
  • Appropriately handle Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN), informing patients of their options when Medicare is likely to deny payment for testing.
  • Inform patients that Medicare requires billing them directly if payment is denied, that they may decline the test, contact their physician for additional diagnosis, or elect to pay for testing if Medicare denies payment.
  • Actively participate and support co-workers in Community Cares initiatives.
  • Work with students and other interested persons to promote the clinical laboratory profession.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude at all times.
  • Demonstrate flexibility when workload requires changing workflow priorities or schedule.

  • Perform general housekeeping duties to keep work areas safe from contamination and physical hazards.
