About The Position

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting high-quality blood specimens, ensuring accurate patient identification, maintaining specimen integrity, and providing exceptional patient care in a fast-paced outpatient nephrology practice. This role works closely with providers, medical assistants, and laboratory personnel to support timely and accurate diagnostic testing. Duties align with common outpatient phlebotomy practice standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
  • National Phlebotomy Certification (ASCP, NHA, AMT, NCCT, or equivalent) or ability to obtain within an approved timeframe.
  • Current BLS certification or ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Proficiency in venipuncture techniques.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to document in an electronic health record.
  • Knowledge of CLIA and laboratory regulatory requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum one year of phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Experience in an outpatient physician office or nephrology practice.
  • Experience using EPIC.
  • Spanish bilingual preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on adult patients.
  • Verify patient identity using approved patient identification procedures.
  • Prepare patients by explaining collection procedures and addressing questions or concerns.
  • Accurately label, process, and prepare specimens for transport and testing.
  • Ensure specimen integrity and proper handling according to laboratory protocols.
  • Collect and process other laboratory specimens as needed.
  • Maintain accurate documentation within the electronic medical record (EPIC).
  • Perform quality control and daily equipment checks.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and notify leadership when inventory is low.
  • Adhere to OSHA, CLIA, HIPAA, and infection prevention standards.
  • Clean and disinfect phlebotomy stations and equipment after each patient.
  • Assist with specimen packaging and courier preparation.
  • Support laboratory workflow and assist with additional duties as assigned.
  • Provide excellent customer service while maintaining patient privacy and dignity.
