About The Position

The Phlebotomist provides routine specimen collection of blood and a variety of other sources from patients. Constant vigilance to maintaining HIPAA standards, safety and universal precautions is required. Work is performed with minimal to moderate supervision.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or GED.
  • Graduate of an accredited phlebotomy program/Current phlebotomy certification.
  • Demonstrates good oral/written communication skills
  • Ability to interact with physicians/patients/other staff members.
  • Possesses basic typing skills.
  • Ability to effectively use EHR (Electronic Health Record).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper, safe, and efficient use of current office equipment/software.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to use Office 365 programs: including Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Bilingual communication preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties as outlined on the phlebotomy skills competency checklist.
  • Perform blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups.
  • Perform urine and sputum collections as ordered for all age groups.
  • Perform CLIA waived lab testing.
  • Properly identify patients with all procedures.
  • Properly explain procedure(s) to client prior to testing.
  • Perform data entry of patient information in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Prepare and collect specimens for testing and analysis.
  • Prepare and package all specimens for transport to the processing lab.
  • Maintain patient specimen entry in the electronic health record.
  • Process billing information
  • Review and correct ICD-10 code errors electronically through laboratory websites
  • Maintain control logs.
  • Order laboratory supplies
  • Maintain a clean and orderly environment in the lab.
  • Provide superior customer service to all patients.
  • Other clerical and entry level clinical duties as assigned.
  • Accurately and efficiently enters documentation in the EMR.
  • Handles emergencies in the lab when necessary. (Including obtaining appropriate staff to assist, maintaining patient safety, and following the direction of the provider)
  • Actively participates in quality improvement projects.
  • Complies with Center policies and procedures; promotes and complies with NCQA PCMH standards of care.
  • Performs other related duties as indicated or when requested by supervisor.
  • Ensures that universal precautions are always utilized.
  • Completes Daily/Day end activities as assigned.
  • Completes all required trainings and attends meetings as assigned.
  • Protects/observes patient confidentiality per policies and procedures.
  • Assures translation, as needed, for non-English speaking patients.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to violent/abusive situations, bomb threats, fire, and emergency situations
