About The Position

This is a Non-Exempt position responsible for obtaining quality blood samples using various phlebotomy methods (venous, capillary, arterial, and line collections) from all age groups, adhering strictly to regulatory requirements and collection procedures. The role involves rapid response to medical emergencies, accurate patient identification, proper specimen labeling, handling, and transportation. The phlebotomist will work with various computer programs, maintain patient confidentiality, and utilize excellent customer relations and communication skills when interacting with patients, nurses, providers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure high customer satisfaction. A positive and professional demeanor is expected, along with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The position requires skills in coping, understanding and following instructions, organization, prioritization, attention to detail, problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making. The role also involves assisting with training students and new employees. This vacancy is not eligible for sponsorship, and Mayo Clinic does not participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • All applicants must include a resume in their application.
  • Community Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (CLMP) employees that have been in their current lab/position for less than 2 years must attach an early release approval from their supervisor.
  • Internal applicants must attach their 3 most recent performance appraisals.
  • Must be able to push a cart and walk distances.
  • Moderate to advanced computer skills.
  • Possess good written and oral communication skills, the ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely, and adjust to changes in work volumes and projects.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Individuals hired to this position are required to complete 2 years in this position before becoming eligible to transfer to other positions within Mayo Clinic.

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy experience, preferred.
  • Experience working in a medical field, preferred.
  • To qualify for Phlebotomist II, the applicant must possess a valid phlebotomy certification from an approved laboratory certification agency, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), National Health Career Association (NHA), or the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT).
  • Certificates from a technical college where the course was taken are not sufficient.
  • The Phlebotomist must have sat for a certification exam from an agency such as those listed above or must possess one of the following valid certifications: Medical Assistant (MA) certification from an approved agency such as the American Medical Association (AMA), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Technologist (MT) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains quality blood samples using a variety of phlebotomy methods (venous, capillary, arterial, and line collections) using standard safety equipment from all age groups with strict adherence to regulatory requirements and collection procedures.
  • Provides rapid response to medical emergencies such as traumas and codes.
  • Responsible for accurate patient identification, quality specimen labeling, handling and transportation.
  • Able to work with a variety of computer programs/systems.
  • Must maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Utilizes good customer relations and communication skills in performing phlebotomy, answering the phone and interacting with patients, nurses, providers and other health care professionals to ensure high customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrates a positive and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Assists with training students and new employees.
  • Willingness to travel to other MCHS locations for assignments as needed.
