About The Position

The Phlebotomist is responsible for verifying positive patient identification, assessing patient reactions to specimen procurement, and performing venipuncture and collecting other specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocols. The role also involves obtaining medical assistance when necessary, ensuring specimen collection is completed according to priority and scheduled times, and verifying that specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing. Additionally, the Phlebotomist will resolve specimen identification and/or requisition problems, clarify requests, answer and screen telephone calls, and assist with inventory and supply/equipment maintenance. They will accept specimens from various customers, receive and sort specimens, and respond to additional specimen procurement requests. The position also includes ordering and verifying test requests, documenting information for quality assurance, reviewing pending and management reports, and generating/distributing reports. Assistance with billing and other business functions, as well as instructing employees and students in phlebotomy and data entry, are also part of the responsibilities. The incumbent must demonstrate knowledge and skills appropriate for the age of the patients served.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1 year phlebotomy experience
  • Basic computer skills including experience using computer software applications.
  • Keyboarding and typing skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good listening skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills to interface effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, and other healthcare employees.
