About The Position

Performs Phlebotomy, utilizing a variety of mechanisms and techniques according to age-specific requirements. Accountable for the accurate data entry of order and collection information, verification and processing of specimens, and timely processing of reports and results inquiry requests. Requirements

  • Demonstrates competency in LIS as evidenced by: accuracy of data entry and transcription, monitoring reports, efficient information retrieval, appropriate response to system errors.
  • Performs phlebotomy using various techniques from inpatients and outpatients of all ages according to department procedures as evidenced by documentation, observation and feedback.
  • Demonstrates use of procedures specific to age of patient served.
  • Responds within acceptable time frame based on appropriate prioritization.
  • Redraws are minimal and in compliance to re-draw policy.
  • Maintains acceptable contamination rate of blood cultures of <2%.
  • Takes initiative to reconcile nursing unit log to lab orders.
  • Follows procedures described for universal precautions when drawing blood or handling specimens.
  • Conforms to hospital standards of patient and specimen identification.
  • Completes age-specific competencies as required without reminders and within specified time frame.
  • Interacts effectively with health care providers, co-workers and patients to effectively represent the department when obtaining and exchanging information to expedite laboratory services.
  • Assures that page or telephone calls are answered with professional etiquette in an appropriate time frame as evidenced by lack of incidents.

  • Inventories and orders appropriate quantity of supplies.
  • Rotates stock to limit unnecessary waste.

  • Maintains specimen storage and temperature requirements.
  • Transports specimens in designated containers.
  • Notifies support services department of any unforeseen delays in transport.
  • Responsible for maintaining materials and equipment during transportation.
  • Operates and maintains hospital vehicle according to established policy.
  • Notifies supervisor of needed vehicle maintenance.
  • Maintains vehicle fluid and gasoline levels for daily operation.
  • Operates vehicle in a safe and courteous manner keeping all logs.
  • Performs "laboratory send in", nursing home, and contract registrations.
  • Accurately registers patient specimens and/or orders for processing.
  • Contacts physician offices and/or patients to verify information as needed, and does so professionally and courteously.
  • Uses the appropriate registration codes and insurance guidelines.
  • Ensures that documentation meets current guidelines and standards.
  • Completes and distributes necessary patient forms and identifications.
  • Identifies the correct patient during Master Patient index search.
  • Verifies insurance via online eligibility system and updates per response.
  • Completes the Medicare Secondary Questionnaire on all appropriate patients.
  • Ensures correct patient information such as denomination and church, nearest and emergency relative etc.

Responsibilities

  • Regular, consistent, on-site, and timely attendance.
  • Demonstrates competency in LIS functions, including accurately placing orders, monitoring reports, retrieving information, responding to system errors, resolving printer issues, and looking up test codes, collection information, and physician demographics.
  • Performs phlebotomy using various techniques from inpatients and outpatients of all ages, following standard precautions, assuring correct patient and specimen identification, following department protocols, using correct "order of draw", and following guidelines for post-venipuncture care.
  • Performs phlebotomy in a prioritized environment with attention to patient safety goals, responding to pages promptly, demonstrating minimal redraws, and maintaining an acceptable blood culture contamination rate.
  • Assists or performs specimen procurement techniques as required, including age-specific procedures, urine drug screen collections, legal alcohol collections, nasal swab collections, and throat swab collections.
  • Receives and processes laboratory orders, documents receipt of specimens, and assesses basic specimen appropriateness, including accessioning, verifying information, adjusting information for efficiency, staying current on test menu and specimen requirements, complying with identification and labeling protocols, processing orders during downtime, assuring accurate transfer of physician orders, and tracking specimens.
  • Interacts effectively with healthcare providers, co-workers, and patients to represent the department and obtain/exchange information, including answering telephones professionally, managing calls efficiently, staying current with department protocols, demonstrating a professional image, delivering specimens timely, seeking resolution of problems, filling supply orders, and progressing specimens to sections in an organized manner.
  • Prints, organizes, and processes a variety of documentation to assure continuity of service, including printing and monitoring collection lists and labels, organizing barcode labels, monitoring delays, utilizing function CLR, processing faxes and results, and monitoring fax modem status.
  • Maintains operational readiness to provide prompt response to service requests, ensuring equipment is functioning properly, inventorying and ordering supplies, rotating stock, maintaining organization of phlebotomy baskets, organizing breaks/lunches, prioritizing tasks, complying with waste management guidelines, performing scanning and indexing of patient orders.
  • Delivers laboratory and non-laboratory specimens, supplies, equipment, and other materials as needed across the system and to physician offices, ensuring timely delivery, proper packaging, maintaining specimen storage requirements, transporting specimens in designated containers, notifying support services of delays, maintaining materials and equipment during transportation, operating and maintaining hospital vehicles, and maintaining vehicle logs.
  • Performs "laboratory send in", nursing home, and contract registrations, including accurately registering specimens/orders, contacting physician offices/patients for verification, using appropriate registration codes and insurance guidelines, ensuring documentation meets guidelines, completing patient forms, identifying correct patients, verifying insurance, completing Medicare Secondary Questionnaires, and ensuring correct patient information.
