The phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of quality biological specimens for laboratory testing, distribution of specimens to proper departments, and proper preparation and handling of specimens for laboratory analysis. This role involves providing superior customer service to patients of all ages, accurately interpreting physician orders, and performing invasive procedures such as venipuncture and micro-capillary collections. The phlebotomist also handles specimen distribution, prepares specimens for shipment, and maintains specimen integrity. Additional duties include patient registration, adhering to identification policies, practicing infection prevention, utilizing laboratory and hospital information systems, and maintaining confidentiality of medical information. The position requires knowledge of CLIA, CAP, and OSHA regulations and the ability to treat patients across a wide age range.
