About The Position

The phlebotomist is responsible for receiving, identifying and obtaining blood samples from neonates, infants, toddlers, school age children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients. The phlebotomist may also process patient samples, perform “Waived” category testing and distribute lab results. This position involves instructing patients, handling incoming phone calls, properly billing for testing and maintaining lab files.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED required.
  • None required (experience).

  • EPIC SunQuest LIS / Handhelds proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Receiving, identifying and obtaining blood samples from patients of all age groups.
  • Processing patient samples.
  • Performing “Waived” category testing.
  • Distributing lab results.
  • Instructing patients.
  • Handling incoming phone calls.
  • Properly billing for testing.
  • Maintaining lab files.
  • Accurately performs all routine duties specified in departmental procedure manuals with only minimal supervision.
  • Provides high quality of service in area assigned.
  • Accurately documents and transcribes report data in a neat, legible manner with no more than two clerical errors per evaluation period.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement activities as requested by department director.
  • Participates in required in-service and continuing education programs or presentations.
  • Routinely performs lab procedures within established department turn around.
  • Follows specified protocol for alert value and stat reporting.
  • Accurately completes Health System-wide Core Competency Manual on an annual basis.
  • Accurately completes Chemical Hygiene competency on an annual basis.
  • Maintains a safe work environment and adheres to safety standards established by departmental and Baptist Health Deaconess policy.
  • Makes every effort to correct or report safety hazards and potentially unsafe working conditions.
  • Develops programs to attain personal goals and participates in educational activities to insure further professional growth.
  • Maintains and projects positive guest relations skills to Trover visitors, patients, families, vendors and employees.
  • Communicates a positive image of Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville through personal and telephone contacts with guests and with general public.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of a patient’s medical condition, medical record or any other important information.
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
