About The Position

Performs routine and special blood specimen collection for all age specific patients. This role involves collecting products or specimens for basic procedures, potentially performing point-of-care testing, and adhering to strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis. The phlebotomist will assist in patient care before, during, and after specimen collection, determine appropriate test combinations and volumes, and be knowledgeable of pre-analytic variables affecting specimen analysis. Familiarity with test synonyms, abbreviations, and cross-referencing tests to specimen types is essential. The role requires utilization of the laboratory computer information system, quality assurance data to enhance services, and recommending procedural changes for quality improvement and customer/patient satisfaction. Maintaining hospital and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, and standards for quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control is crucial. Compliance with accreditation and regulatory agency requirements through mandatory in-services, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement participation is expected. The phlebotomist will also maintain and upgrade personal professional development, organize supplies and equipment, and notify appropriate associates of re-order levels or repair needs. Additionally, this role may involve assisting in the training of new associates or students.

Requirements

Must be in High School or pursuing a High School Diploma, or equivalent.
Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or documented phlebotomy experience (Ex. venipunctures, experience with effective puncture techniques, blood draws).

Responsibilities

Utilizes laboratory computer information system to include all work aides and shortcuts within the system.
Utilizes quality assurance data to enhance the services rendered by the section.
Recommends changes in procedures to address quality issues and provide customer/patient satisfaction.
Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
Complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies by attending mandatory in-services and continuing laboratory education and participating in continuous quality improvement.
Maintains and upgrades personal professional development.
Maintains appropriate par levels and organizes supplies and equipment in work areas as assigned.
Notifies appropriate associate when re-order levels are reached, and equipment needs to be repaired.
Assists in the training of new associates or students.
