About The Position

This role involves performing phlebotomy collection procedures on patients, assisting them before, during, and after specimen collection, and providing instructions for various specimen collections. The position also includes data entry, preparing and maintaining equipment, maintaining inventory of supplies, and performing point-of-care laboratory testing. The Phlebotomist is responsible for reporting test results, ensuring quality control, and maintaining a safe work area according to safety, cleanliness, and infection control procedures. This role also requires participation in continuous process improvement, training, and maintaining patient confidentiality.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Strong phlebotomy skills.
  • Proficient in phlebotomy (venipuncture and capillary puncture) and specimen collection procedures.
  • Knowledge of clinical protocols, policies, medical laboratory principles, standards, applications, and testing competency.
  • Knowledge of how to use/maintain laboratory equipment appropriately.
  • Knowledge of safety, infection control policies and regulations
  • ASCP/AMT certification preferred.
  • Successful completion of Phlebotomy course of study.
  • Flexibility in schedule about hours/shift.
  • Saturday rotation and travel as needed to outer offices.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to instructions.
  • Ability to work as a team or independently.
  • Ability to prioritize workflow.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment/decision-making and discretion in reporting/distributing results.
  • Ability to establish/maintain cooperative relationships with patients, families and staff.
  • Ability to organize effectively and work quickly with high level of accuracy and precision.
  • Ability to work as a team or independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy certification is preferred.
  • Minimum one year of work experience in health care preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform data entry/ordering in the computer.
  • Perform phlebotomy collection procedures on patients per protocol.
  • Assist patient before, during, and after specimen collection.
  • Provide instructions to outpatients on various specimen collections.
  • Prepare/maintain equipment in lab/phlebotomy room as needed.
  • Clean/maintain safe work area following safety, cleanliness, and infection control procedures.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of phlebotomy supplies and place orders as needed.
  • Perform point-of-care laboratory testing including urinalysis, rapid influenza, rapid strep, glucose etc.
  • Reports test results following clinic protocols, drawing special alerts to physicians and/or nurses on "red flag" results.
  • Ensures quality control in collecting specimens, and in ensuring appropriate sampling and records.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Reviews quality control to verify equipment is functioning properly.
  • Complies with all policies and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness, and infection control.
  • Takes initiative on assigned/volunteered projects and follows through to completion.
  • Participate in proficiency testing, training, and continuing education.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Encourage positive relations within our organization and any outside organizations.
  • Participate in continuous process improvement by offering potential solutions to problems observed.
