This is a full-time position, 36 hours per week, with day shifts that include weekends and holidays. The role is hourly, non-exempt, and unionized. The position requires accurate transcription of provider test orders, processing of standing and verbal orders, and obtaining Advance Beneficiary Notices if necessary. A key responsibility is to positively identify patients and collect blood specimens using appropriate techniques for the patient's age and physical state. The role also involves instructing and directing the collection of urine specimens, determining specimen acceptability, and providing collection requirements to patients and providers. Processing of specimens, both in-house and referral, stocking supplies, and maintaining a neat work area are also part of the duties. The phlebotomist will process outgoing laboratory reports, file reports and requisitions, and operate the CPSI system. Specific testing includes urinalysis dipstick, urine pregnancy test screening, and occult blood testing, as well as other waived tests approved by the laboratory manager. The position also involves instructing and observing students in collection techniques and orienting new employees. Safety is paramount, requiring the use of personal protective equipment, appropriate use of safety needles and devices, immediate disposal of capped needles, and proper use of Sharps containers and red bag waste. The employee must observe, report, and eliminate safety hazards, follow safety and exposure control procedures, and maintain BLS Certification. Additionally, the role includes pulling compliance data, renewing reference lab bills, and actively participating in the Hospital-wide Quality Improvement Program and department-specific initiatives. The incumbent will also be expected to participate in emergency/disaster preparedness planning, drills, and response.
