Performs laboratory specimen collection from patients for diagnostic purposes. This role involves determining and executing the best method for obtaining biological specimens from patients of all ages (venipuncture, capillary, heel-stick) to ensure quality specimens for testing, while following established productivity guidelines with minimal errors. The phlebotomist will also order appropriate tests in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), resolve unclear test orders, and respond to requests for lab results. Interaction with patients is key, requiring a professional and compassionate manner, explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and ensuring comfort. Responsibilities include preparing aliquots of samples and shipping batches, maintaining a safe and clean working environment, managing laboratory supply inventory, performing preventative maintenance on equipment, and practicing proper patient identification verification. Active participation in the laboratory quality plan and training of new staff and students is also expected.
