This role involves performing venipuncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks to obtain optimal blood specimens with minimal patient inconvenience. The phlebotomist will monitor worklists, prioritize workload, and ensure timely specimen collection. Accurate patient identification using full name and date of birth, along with bedside barcode scanning, is crucial. Specimens must be properly labeled in the presence of the patient. The phlebotomist will also make necessary notations on orders, print uncollected reports, process specimens by centrifugation, and perform iStat ACT patient testing and Quality Control. Data entry into the LIS, including collection data and test cancellations, is a key responsibility, as is entering physician’s orders. The role requires initiative, good decision-making, the ability to accept constructive criticism, and maintaining a clean work environment. Assisting with employee training and performing other duties as assigned are also part of the role.
