About The Position

Under general supervision, performs advanced and complex phlebotomy procedures. This role involves drawing blood samples and handling other samples for laboratory analysis, registering patients, ordering tests, verifying orders and billing information, and entering patient data into the laboratory computer database. The position also includes preparing specimens for transport, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with hospital and laboratory safety policies. The role is available in levels 1, 2, or 3 depending on experience, education, and licenses/certifications.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED required.
Completion of a Phlebotomy training course, medical training course or on the job training required.
Current Basic Life Support from AHA (American Heart Association) certification required.
1-3 years of experience required (for Level 1).
3-5 years of experience required (for Level 2).
5 or more years of experience required (for Level 3).
Knowledge of phlebotomy policies, procedures, techniques and processing requirements.
Excellent verbal and written communications, in accordance to PAACT agreement.
Phlebotomist must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served by his or her service, including all types of phlebotomy procedures.
Must follow policy regarding HIPAA and privacy of confidential information.
Core level knowledge of normal laboratory testing processes and specimen requirements.
Ability and skill to apply core level theory, practices and techniques to perform, post-process, analyze and annotate data or procedure documentation.
Ability to prioritize and complete clinical or non-clinical work assignments.

Nice To Haves

Current phlebotomy certification required (must have issue date and expiration date on certificate): Phlebotomy Technician (PBT)- American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC), Phlebotomy Certification (PC) – National Healthcare Certification Organization (NHCO) or Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)- National Performance Specialists (NPS) (required for Level 2 and 3)

Responsibilities

Performs routine phlebotomy procedures, drawing blood samples and handling other samples, for laboratory analysis as ordered by the attending physicians.
Ensures properly identified and labeled specimens in accordance with authorized technical procedures and laboratory policies.
Performs other job duties as applicable such as administering glucose tolerance test, and sweat chlorides.
Registers patients, orders tests, and verifies completeness of orders and billing information.
Enters patient demographic data, insurance and billing information, and the specific laboratory tests ordered by the medical staff into the laboratory computer database.
Prepares specimens for transport to lab including but not limited to pouring off urines and centrifugation of blood samples as appropriate.
Ensures prompt delivery of the samples to the laboratory for analysis.
Maintains accurate records, documents and files as required.
Complies with all hospital and laboratory safety policies and procedures including the appropriate use of PPE.
Completes annual competency assessment.
Assumes responsibility of own professional development.
Performs other duties as assigned.
