This position is responsible for performing various laboratory functions, including accurate order placement in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), monitoring reports, responding to system errors, and looking up test codes and physician demographics. The role requires adherence to standard precautions for venous or capillary phlebotomy, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification using two identifiers, and following specific department protocols for blood collection and post-venipuncture care. Responsibilities include responding to pages promptly, minimizing redraws in compliance with policy, maintaining a low blood culture contamination rate, and assisting with specimen procurement techniques. The phlebotomist will also assist with urine drug screen collections and collections for legal alcohols, perform nasal and throat swab collections, and process laboratory orders, documenting specimen receipt and assessing basic appropriateness. They will manage downtime processing to ensure testing progression, interact effectively with healthcare providers and patients, and answer telephones professionally. Maintaining current knowledge of department protocols, delivering specimens timely, packaging samples for safe transport, and filling supply orders are also key duties. The role involves monitoring collection and unreceived lists, maintaining operational readiness, and managing inventory to prevent waste. Scanning and indexing patient orders, preparing samples for transport with required computer work, and operating hospital vehicles safely are also part of the job. Additionally, the phlebotomist will participate in the competency and validation of new employees, RNs, and technical partners. Other duties may be assigned.
