Under general supervision of the Laboratory Operations Manager, Supervisor or Phlebotomy Coordinator, and within established hospital and department policies and procedures, this role performs a variety of clerical/receptionist duties to receive, direct, and process patient specimens in the laboratory. The position also involves performing age-appropriate phlebotomy procedures on patients in sub-acute, long-term care healthcare facilities, and adult day care centers. The job requires collecting blood specimens from patients of all ages using approved techniques for venipuncture and capillary puncture, following infection control and safety protocols. It also involves verifying patient identity, ensuring proper specimen labeling, preparing and delivering specimens, accessing and reviewing electronic lab orders, and accurately entering data into the hospital’s electronic medical record (EMR). The role demands providing compassionate and professional care, communicating procedures clearly, and adhering to all hospital, departmental, and regulatory policies. Responsibilities include monitoring and restocking supplies, notifying supervisors of equipment malfunctions or inventory needs, coordinating with nursing staff and physicians, participating in team meetings, and responding promptly to urgent collection requests.
