About The Position

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood and clinical specimens while ensuring patient safety, comfort, and accurate specimen handling. Performs specimen processing, documentation, and laboratory support duties in accordance with established policies, regulatory requirements, and infection prevention standards. Works under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager. All employees are expected to perform their duties in alignment with CIH’s mission, values, and vision. This position is responsible for performing a variety of tasks that contribute to a high level of customer satisfaction, patient care, and operational excellence, while treating all individuals with respect and dignity.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program required.
Knowledge of purchasing, inventory control, and supply chain operations, preferably in a healthcare setting.
Knowledge of basic budgeting principles and cost analysis.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail and accuracy.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to negotiate and maintain productive vendor relationships.
Ability to work collaboratively with clinical and administrative departments.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and inventory or purchasing systems.
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
Work closely with patients of all age groups, considering age-specific needs.
Engage in varied physical activities including standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting.
Maintain manual dexterity for operating computers, telephones, office, and medical equipment as necessary.
Possess corrected vision and hearing within normal range.
Work efficiently in a fast-paced and occasionally stressful environment.
Handle frequent interruptions and manage potentially emotional situations involving accidents, injuries, or deaths.
Respond effectively to emergency and crisis situations following established policies.
Mitigate risks associated with exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and hazardous chemicals.
Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT I or CPT II) certification required

Nice To Haves

Minimum of two (2) years of experience performing venipuncture, capillary blood collection, and specimen processing in a hospital, clinic, or comparable healthcare setting preferred.
Knowledge of laboratory terminology, specimen handling procedures, and infection control practices.
Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR) preferred.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred or required, as applicable.

Responsibilities

Performs blood collection procedures, including venipuncture, capillary puncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks, using appropriate equipment and sterile techniques.
Explains collection procedures to patients, addresses questions or concerns, and promotes patient comfort and safety throughout the collection process.
Accurately labels, identifies, processes, and prepares specimens for in-house testing or transport to reference laboratories following established procedures.
Performs routine laboratory testing and assists with specialized testing as directed and within the scope of the position.
Maintains specimen integrity through proper handling, storage, transport, and quality control procedures.
Reviews laboratory orders, verifies patient identification, and ensures accurate documentation of specimen collection, testing, and patient information.
Operates, cleans, and performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and instruments according to established procedures.
Maintains laboratory inventory by monitoring supplies, stocking work areas, and requesting laboratory and office supplies as needed.
Maintains a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment by following OSHA, CLSI, infection control, and biohazard waste disposal guidelines.
Collaborates with providers, nurses, laboratory personnel, and other departments to ensure timely and accurate specimen collection and processing.
Responds appropriately to patient reactions during or after specimen collection and assists with patient recovery as needed.
Maintains the confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
Adheres to Universal Precautions and all applicable safety, quality assurance, and regulatory standards.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Adhere to all HIPAA regulations as outlined in the HIPAA Policy and Procedure Manual.
