The Phlebotomist is responsible for verifying positive patient identification, assessing patient reactions to specimen procurement, and performing venipuncture and collecting other specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocols. This role also involves performing limited testing under CLIA guidelines, answering and screening telephone calls, accepting and sorting specimens, packaging and tracking specimens for transport, and processing specimens for testing. Additionally, the Phlebotomist orders and verifies test requests, documents information for quality assurance, runs quality control checks, notifies providers of stat/critical results, performs laboratory result entry, and conducts proficiency testing. The role also includes instructing employees and students in phlebotomy and related functions, and demonstrating knowledge and skills appropriate for the age of the patients served.
