This position follows established departmental and SMC policies and procedures, objectives, quality control and performance improvement programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. The role involves receiving and/or collecting specimens, labeling them appropriately, and maintaining specimen integrity until discarded. The Phlebotomist performs test procedures, reviews and verifies patient results, and communicates critical values to healthcare personnel. Responsibilities also include supply inventory, implementing infectious disease controls, proper disposal of sharps and hazardous materials, and cleaning/maintaining laboratory equipment. The role requires maintaining current knowledge of equipment and procedures, performing calibrations, maintenance, and quality control. Competence in computer skills for order entry, collections, result entry, and report retrieval is essential. The Phlebotomist must attend required safety, compliance, and infection control in-services and maintain knowledge of coding and billing policies. Professional growth is encouraged through educational programs and meetings. The position also involves performing and documenting required records, reports, and statistics, and completing shift end checks. Other duties as assigned will also be performed.
