About The Position

At Uvalde Memorial Hospital, even the smallest moments of care can make a lasting impression. We are looking for a skilled and compassionate Phlebotomist to join our Laboratory team and help provide patients with a safe, comfortable, and positive experience while supporting the diagnostic testing that guides their care. As a Phlebotomist, you’ll work with patients in both hospital and outpatient settings, combining technical skill, attention to detail, and a reassuring approach. From accurate specimen collection to a kind word during a blood draw, you’ll play an important role in delivering exceptional care to our community.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a Phlebotomy program with a minimum of 80 hours of training in venipuncture and skin puncture techniques required.
  • Current BLS certification for healthcare providers required.
  • Strong venipuncture skills, including pediatric collection techniques.
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to stay focused and compassionate while working independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced hospital environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy Technician, Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT), or Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant (CCMLA) certification highly preferred. If not certified at hire, one of these certifications must be obtained within one year.
  • Six months to one year of hospital-based phlebotomy experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood, swab, urine, and other specimens from inpatient and outpatient populations.
  • Perform venipuncture and other collection techniques while prioritizing patient safety and comfort.
  • Accurately identify patients and label specimens at the bedside to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Properly handle, transport, and assist with processing specimens for timely diagnostic testing.
  • Document specimen collections accurately in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Follow infection prevention, PPE, biohazard, and laboratory safety protocols.
  • Maintain clean and organized phlebotomy equipment, trays, and work areas.
  • Communicate and collaborate with nurses, physicians, laboratory staff, and other members of the healthcare team.
