About The Position

The Phlebotomist will be responsible for collecting clinical laboratory specimens, including human blood and other body fluids, as well as specimens like stool and urine for AIC testing requested by a clinician. This involves performing routine venipuncture and capillary procedures, instructing patients on proper specimen collection, and processing and transporting specimens. Processing includes centrifugation, spin down, mixing, and preparing specimens for shipment. The role also involves handling infectious and bio-hazardous waste, assisting laboratory staff with various tasks such as data entry into a laboratory information system, preparing paperwork, and managing laboratory supplies. Additionally, the Phlebotomist will maintain required competency training, keep an inventory of needles and syringes, scan medical records, assist primary providers in the urgent care room with basic medical equipment, and conduct routine checks of equipment and temperature logs. Maintaining a daily sick call list is also part of the duties.

Requirements

  • Valid certification to practice in the state of West Virginia as a Medical Assistant, Laboratory Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician or Phlebotomist.
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified, in accordance with the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • 1 year of experience as a phlebotomist.

Responsibilities

  • Collecting clinical laboratory specimens (human blood) and body fluids and clinical specimens (i.e. stool, urine, sputum) for the AIC testing requested by a clinician.
  • Collecting specimens via routine venipuncture and capillary procedures.
  • Instructing patients on proper collection of specimens such as stool and urine for laboratory analysis.
  • Processing and transporting specimens, including centrifugation, spin down, mixing, preparing and packaging specimens for shipment.
  • Handling infectious and bio-hazardous waste.
  • Assisting laboratory staff in a variety of laboratory related activities, including ordering entry into a computerized laboratory information system, preparing laboratory related paperwork, storing and inventorying laboratory supplies.
  • Maintaining required competency training as outlined by accrediting standards and local policy.
  • Keeping accurate inventory of all needles and syringes used to replace sub stock inventory.
  • Scanning of medical records and reports as needed.
  • Assisting primary providers in the urgent care room when necessary and utilizing basic medical equipment.
  • Conducting routine checks of equipment and temperature logs.
  • Maintaining daily sick call list/call out.
