About The Position

This position is for a Phlebotomist at the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta, ME. The role involves collecting clinical laboratory specimens, including blood, urine, and sputum, for VA testing. Responsibilities include performing venipuncture and capillary procedures, instructing patients on specimen collection, processing and packaging specimens for shipment, handling bio-hazardous waste, and assisting laboratory staff with various tasks. The Phlebotomist will also be responsible for maintaining inventory, scanning medical records, assisting in the urgent care room, and conducting equipment checks.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Must have completed a Phlebotomy course of study – completion diploma is required.
  • Must have completed a Phlebotomist, Medical Assistant, Laboratory Assistant, or an Emergency Medical Technician training program.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience with basic laboratory and phlebotomy skills.
  • Have experience with specimen collection, packaging, and shipment to referral laboratories with knowledge of maintaining appropriate records.
  • Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC) or the American Heart Association (AHA).

  • Bilingual oral communication skills are desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Collecting clinical laboratory specimens (human blood) and body fluids and clinical specimens (i.e., stool, urine, sputum) for the VA testing requested by a clinician.
  • Collection of specimens will be accomplished via routine venipuncture and capillary procedures.
  • Instructing patients on proper collection of specimens, such as stool and urine, for laboratory analysis.
  • Processing and transporting specimens.
  • Processing will include, but not be limited to, specimen centrifugation, spin-down, mixing, preparation, and packaging specimens for shipment.
  • Handling infectious and bio-hazardous waste.
  • Assisting laboratory staff in a variety of laboratory-related activities, including but not limited to ordering entry into a computerized laboratory information system, preparing laboratory-related paperwork, and storing and inventorying laboratory supplies.
  • Maintaining required competency training as outlined by accrediting standards and local policy.
  • Keeping an accurate inventory of all needles and syringes used to replace the sub stock inventory.
  • Scanning of medical records and reports as needed.
  • Assisting primary providers in the urgent care room when necessary and utilizing basic medical equipment.
  • Conducting routine checks of equipment and temperature logs.
