About The Position

Performs phlebotomy functions and non–technical duties. This role involves drawing blood, identifying patients, labeling specimens, prioritizing STAT draws, utilizing computer systems for order entry and record keeping, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment. The phlebotomist will also assist co-workers, train new employees, and adhere to all organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Additionally, responsibilities include receptionist duties in the outpatient lab, daily equipment cleaning, temperature recording for refrigerators, and fostering a culture of safety by adhering to universal precautions and using personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education - Preferred Equivalent of four (4) years of high school education preferred.
  • Minimum Work Experience One (1) year of full time experience preferred.
  • Certified or certified eligible with National Phlebotomy Association preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick) according to established procedure.
  • Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.
  • Determines priority of STAT draws and ensures timely transport of all patient specimens to the lab for testing.
  • Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions.
  • Organizes assigned work and accurately completes work load statistics.
  • Helps co-workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments when needed to ensure an orderly work flow.
  • Under supervision will help in the training of new employees and student interns in the performance of phlebotomy duties.
  • Follows all organizational and department or unit policies and procedures.
  • Readily accepts changes in assignment. Performs work level of equal skill and responsibility as needed. May be required to do work of lesser responsibility when the workload of the department so requires.
  • Will act as a receptionist, greet patients and answer phones in the outpatient lab when required.
  • Is responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department.
  • Records daily temperature of refrigerator.
  • Technology – Is receptive to technological solutions to work processes and practices.
  • Safety Awareness – Fosters a “Culture of Safety” through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment as stated in the Safety Management Program Manual, Infection Control Manual and Phlebotomy Policies & Procedure Manual. The employee is knowledgeable of who the Hospital Safety Officer is.
  • Consistently adheres to established Laboratory and Hospital policies for Universal Precautions and Safety Procedures.
  • When handling blood/and or body fluids, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be utilized in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases.
  • Wears gloves, gowns, goggles, or masks as required.
  • Disinfects & cleans work area at the beginning and end of each shift.
  • Knows where to find Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for any item used in job performance.
