About The Position
The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing various venipuncture techniques to collect blood specimens from patients of all age groups. Individuals performing in this job role are responsible for transcribing laboratory orders from outside providers, and for receiving, processing, transporting, and distributing all laboratory specimens. Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required.
- Equivalent relevant experience of 4 years in lieu of High School or GED.
- Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (CPR, BLS) - American Heart Association
- Knowledge of standard phlebotomy techniques and appropriate blood processing and handling procedures.
- Record keeping skills.
- Understand and follow specific clinical protocols, ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Nice To Haves
- Completion of certification program preferred.
- Phlebotomy Certification or LSBME Lab Assistant or Phlebotomy license
Responsibilities
- Performs venipuncture and skin puncture on all patient age groups in accordance with department SOP
- Performs appropriate patient identification according to SOP, utilizing at least two patient identifiers when collecting and labeling specimens at the bedside in the presence of the patient
- Labels aliquots using at least two patient identifiers
- Transcribes orders from outside providers as necessary
- Responds to applicable code teams as needed
- Adherence to universal and special precautions outlined by laboratory and organizational policies
- Adheres to SOP in using handheld devices for specimen collection
- Monitors collection list and documents status of outstanding collections
- Monitors expected list for pending lab test
- Answers phone calls, demonstrating appropriate customer service skills
- Must work weekends and holidays as assigned
- Ensures specimen collection supplies are available and within expiration dates
- Notifies laboratory leadership when supplies are falling below thresholds or expiration dates are upcoming
- Stocks phlebotomy supplies when deliveries are received
- Stocks phlebotomy carts with supplies, ensuring adequate inventory available on cart for next shift
- Ensures that specimens are updated to received status and collection date/time, collector, and receipt date/time is accurate
- Delivers specimens to the appropriate Lab Section.
- Communicates complaints or problems to department supervisor
