About The Position

The Phlebotomist Technician performs a range of laboratory duties, which includes phlebotomy, specimen handling, telecommunication, and some clerical duties. The position is part of the GPC Lab Draw Station and operates on a Day Shift schedule with 40 scheduled weekly hours.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Complete Genesis assigned phlebotomy course at Genesis laboratory.
  • Sign off of competency to draw blood from Genesis Physician Services – yearly.
  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service and maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure in a complex and changing working environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates excellence with listening, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Works in an environment that requires special blood and body fluid safety requirements.
  • Employee must be able to answer telephone calls, use personal computers and other business machines, all which require the ability to apply finger dexterity.
  • Individual must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time along with the ability to bend, stoop, and kneel.
  • Regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision abilities required include up close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Employee may be required to travel to multiple locations including outpatient draw centers and nursing homes.
  • May be required to periodically rotate shifts and regular days off.
  • All system employees must be willing to work all shifts, extra hours, holidays and emergency shifts as required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy, demonstrating proper collection techniques in accordance with the laboratory collection services policy and procedure manual.
  • Maintain knowledge of laboratory tests and appropriate computer ordering codes.
  • Process specimens, maintaining specimen integrity according to individual test requirements.
  • Maintain proficiency in record management, including specimen chain of custody, patient release of information forms, consent forms, and filing reference lab reports.
  • Stay in compliance with all regulatory agencies, including ODH, CLIA, OSHA, and HIPPA.
  • Perform in-office point-of-care (POC) testing, including but not limited to: Strep, Flu A&B, hemoccult, urinalysis, HCG, drug screening, hemoglobin A1C, lipid panel, PT/INR.
  • Collect other specimen types, such as urine, throat, and nasopharyngeal swabs.
  • Provide outstanding customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Maintain the highest level of professionalism and confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform other functions as assigned.
