About The Position

This role involves performing venipuncture and skin punctures competently and expediently, with a thorough knowledge of test requirements. The Phlebotomist Processor will also assist in the Clinical Laboratory as needed. The position requires providing test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating hematology, urinalysis, and chemistry analyzers, and maintaining specimen integrity through proper aseptic technique and adherence to department procedures. The role also includes managing specimen processing and handling, researching specimen requirements for reference labs, and arranging for critical specimen handling and complex transportation. The Phlebotomist Processor must be able to organize daily tasks, adjust schedules for STATs and out-patients, keep the work area clean and stocked, perform analyzer maintenance, and maintain daily logs. Accurate documentation using the LIS system, recognizing and reporting system failures or inconsistent results, and ensuring timely delivery of reports are also key responsibilities. The role contributes to a safe and secure environment by following established standards and procedures, complying with legal regulations, and maintaining patient confidentiality. A proficient understanding of OSHA guidelines, Eye Wash Station usage, and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) is required. The ability to train on CBC and point of care equipment and work the LIS pending list to completion daily is also necessary. Flexibility to travel and assist at other locations based on business needs is required.

Requirements

  • 1 year of experience as a phlebotomist
  • High School Diploma
  • Skillful and knowledgeable in all aspects related to drawing blood.
  • Experience with LIS system.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible
  • Demonstrate knowledge of color top tube to use, volume of blood needed and test requirements
  • Identify the patient by verifying patient information on the requisition with the patient using two patient identifiers. (First and Last name & DOB)
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using proper aseptic technique, following department procedures, observing isolation procedures.
  • Maintains that all aspects of processing and handling of all specimens ran in-house and referred out are carried out in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner
  • Referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; maintaining unresolved orders.
  • Provides test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating hematology, urinalysis, and chemistry analyzers.
  • Researches specimen requirements for reference labs and arranges for critical specimen handling and complex transportation arrangements when needed
  • Consistently determines proper priorities when organizing daily tasks and is able to adjust schedule in view of STAT's, out-patients, and time draws
  • Keep work area clean and stocked properly with all needed supplies.
  • Performs needed maintenance on analyzers and documents properly on analyzer logs.
  • Maintains all daily logs.
  • Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
  • Can appropriately document using the LIS system all specimens collected and appropriately order the testing according to the requisition from the ordering physician.
  • Recognizes system failures, and inconsistent or erroneous patients results, and reports these along with unusual test orders and communicates appropriately.
  • Organizes work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens; arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surfaces clean and order.
  • Knows and uses proper reporting systems (including critical/panic results). Understands and utilizes the LIS to ensure that the physician receives all reports and that all critical/panic reports are relayed without delay.
  • Contributes to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers by following established standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Maintains patient confidence by keeping laboratory information confidential
  • Adheres to professional standards, clinic policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements
  • Proficient understanding of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines.
  • Understands how to use an Eye Wash Station.
  • Understands and monitors Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Ability to train on CBC and point of care equipment.
  • Work LIS pending list to completion daily.
  • Must be flexible to travel and assist at other locations based on business needs and management direction
