It also involves utilizing the order entry system for error resolution and troubleshooting, and demonstrating skill in Laboratory Information System (LIS) functions such as placing orders, looking up test codes, and managing collection information. The role includes monitoring various reports, HIS-LIS interactions, and daily operational tasks. Standard precautions are to be followed during phlebotomy, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification. The position requires adherence to department protocols for blood collection, maintaining an acceptable blood culture contamination rate, and assisting with urine drug screens and legal alcohol collections. Effective interaction with healthcare providers and patients is essential, as is professional telephone etiquette. The role involves staying current with department protocols, filling supply orders, and progressing specimens efficiently. Maintaining and organizing documentation, scanning and indexing documents, and processing laboratory orders are key responsibilities. The Phlebotomist Lead must also comply with specimen identification and labeling protocols, respond effectively to changes in work volume, and ensure accurate transfer of physician orders. Compiling, sorting, mailing, and processing results, monitoring pending reports, and maintaining the physician database are also part of the duties. The role includes processing faxes and results, maintaining operational readiness of the work area, and managing supply inventory. Organizing and sending out testing performed in laboratories or approved reference laboratories, organizing samples for send-out testing, and managing study protocols are required. Assisting with assigning lower-level staff, participating in quality management programs, and communicating with the IT Help Desk are also duties. The role requires operating hospital vehicles and leading phlebotomy competency and validation of new employees, RNs, and technical partners. Other duties as assigned.
