About The Position

The Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant collects blood and other specimens, processes and labels samples, and performs clerical tasks to support laboratory operations. The role includes collecting specimens through venipuncture or finger sticks, processing laboratory orders and samples, performing specified point-of-care tests, preparing specimens for reference laboratories, and maintaining the draw station and its supplies. The position also supports patient care through appropriate routing of test results and requires confidentiality, customer service, and continuing professional development.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Must have and maintain CPR certification.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, patients, and the public.
Knowledge of HIPAA privacy rules and regulations.
Excellent customer service skills and the ability to interact effectively and respectfully with others.
Ability to manage multiple tasks, work under pressure, and prioritize workload.
Ability to work independently and use good judgment.
Ability to follow written protocols and procedures.
Knowledge of standard office machines.
Social and cultural sensitivity appropriate to an ethnically and economically diverse patient and employee base.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a medical and/or laboratory environment; beneficial but not required.
Phlebotomy certification; preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

Collect laboratory specimens by performing venipunctures or finger sticks; assist nursing staff or physicians with collecting other specimens as needed.
Place orders into the Laboratory Information System.
Send out drug testing by urinalysis or blood, complete forms, and package specimens for shipment by FedEx.
Collect in-house 12-Drug Panels.
Enter and complete paper and electronic orders through Athena Health into Orchard.
Accession patient specimens for testing and send-out, including logging specimens, operating the centrifuge, and aliquoting specimens.
Perform patient testing, quality control, and proficiency testing using the specified glucose meter, rapid test kits, and iFOB.
Prepare outgoing tests for the reference laboratory.
Route patient test results appropriately to ensure physician review.
Clean and disinfect the draw station daily and keep the draw room neat and orderly.
Keep the draw room stocked, maintain inventory, and prepare supply order sheets for downstairs laboratory staff.
Participate in professional development and continuing education as required.
Maintain confidentiality of patients’ medical records.
