About The Position

The laboratories of IU Health offer comprehensive laboratory services, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and performing over 19 million tests annually. These services are provided to IU Health, as well as hospitals and physicians nationwide. The Phlebotomist/Specimen Processor provides general laboratory services including specimen collection, order entry, blood component preparation, specimen receipt, waived testing, and pre-analytic processing. The role also involves clerical tasks such as entering orders, confirming specimen validity, answering phone calls, and managing faxes. The incumbent may also be responsible for patient and specimen registration and specimen delivery. The ideal candidate will have strong customer service skills, attention to detail, organizational skills, basic computer skills, and be highly compassionate.

Requirements

  • HS grad or GED Equivalent
  • Proven understanding of computers
  • Telephone skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks for prolonged periods of time

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program with experience in laboratory or coursework in biological, chemical or related science preferred
  • Valid Indiana Operators license and a good driving history for the last three years (may require)
  • Understanding of the traffic laws in the State of Indiana (may require)

Responsibilities

  • Provide general laboratory services including specimen collection using routine venipuncture
  • Perform order entry
  • Prepare blood components
  • Handle specimen receipt
  • Conduct waived testing
  • Perform pre-analytic processing of specimens
  • Enter orders into the system
  • Confirm validity of each specimen
  • Answer phone calls
  • Manage faxes
  • Be responsible for patient and specimen registration (may be)
  • Deliver specimens (may be)
  • Serve on appropriate committees or projects that contribute to the overall purpose and essential functions of the department (may be)
