About The Position

Under general guidance, performs advanced-level phlebotomy procedures, collects blood specimens through venipuncture, finger or heel sticks on patients, may initiate IVs, ensures specimen quality, and takes responsibility for patient safety and comfort in accordance with established protocols.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is mandatory.
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program is required.
  • Prior experience in a healthcare setting is necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a registered phlebotomist from a nationally recognized organization, such as the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, is preferred.
  • At least three years of experience as a phlebotomist is preferred.
  • Experience in laboratory specimen processing is also preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collects venous and/or capillary blood samples following established guidelines.
  • Uses a computerized system to document and track specimen collection and patient details.
  • Operates basic medical laboratory instruments, including centrifuges and microscopes.
  • Communicates effectively with laboratory and clinical staff to address specimen-related issues and to accurately identify and label samples for processing, transport, and storage.
  • Responds promptly to STAT phlebotomy requests when necessary.
  • Capable of standing for extended periods and walking intermittently while performing phlebotomy tasks.
  • May receive and process specimens for testing across various laboratory departments as per standard procedures.
  • Operates centrifuges and separates specimens according to departmental protocols; stores specimens appropriately when required.
  • Inputs patient demographic information into the laboratory information system, accesses existing accounts or creates new ones, identifies the need for new medical records, and avoids duplicate entries. Orders tests as specified by the physician on requisitions.
  • Handles telephone inquiries regarding test results, specimen status, or other general questions.
  • Monitors outstanding phlebotomy orders to ensure timely completion of collections.
  • Supports the training of new staff by adhering to training checklists, completing competency evaluations, and verifying readiness before assigning shifts.
  • Proficiently performs donor blood collections if applicable at the facility.
  • May evaluate patients for suitable IV insertion sites and initiate peripheral intravenous lines using Jelcos, butterfly needles, or other devices as ordered by physicians. Changes IV sites every 48 hours. Conducts floor rounds every other day to inspect IV sites and maintains logs of all patient IVs to ensure accurate site management.
  • May insert heparin locks and other vascular access devices and draw blood samples from these devices as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
