About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Support Services (LSS) Supervisor, this position provides guidance and ancillary service for clinical activities by performing specimen procurement, related specialized procedures, specimen processing, and reference lab processing according to LSS policy and procedures based on standards set by the National Certifying Agency for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS). The Phlebotomist I plays a lead role in ensuring the workstation adheres to turnaround times for specimen processing, acts as a technical resource, and trains new employees. This role also involves participating in quality improvement activities, maintaining competency documentation, and supporting the hospital's mission and values.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program.
  • One year of Phlebotomy, and/or specimen processing experience required.

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy Certification (ASCP) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direction in the assigned workstation by assisting staff in daily operations.
  • Performs all essential duties and responsibilities of a Laboratory Support Phlebotomist and Laboratory Support Technician.
  • Reviews reference lab test results for accuracy, completeness, and appropriate coded comments or free text.
  • Releases reviewed reference lab test results from the hold file.
  • Takes a lead role in ensuring the workstation adheres to stated turnaround times for processing of stat and routine specimens.
  • Acts as a technical resource for staff in the assigned workstation.
  • Ensures scheduled equipment maintenance is performed.
  • Recognizes and resolves technical and non-technical problems in the laboratory, obtaining help as appropriate.
  • Records information on the problem log and reports all problems to supervisory staff.
  • Trains new employees in the assigned workstation.
  • Records late and sick calls for staff in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Ensures quality patient services in the assigned workstation.
  • Informs other laboratory sections of labeling problems, patient identification, or medical record number problems.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement (QI) activities.
  • Maintains initial and annual competency documentation.
  • Attends departmental continuing education classes and scheduled staff meetings.
  • Supports technical training of departmental staff members.
  • Furthers the mission and philosophy of the hospital; treats all hospital staff, patients, and visitors with courtesy and respect.
  • Communicates important information regarding the laboratory to fellow staff members.
  • Answers the telephone according to departmental policy.
  • Works cooperatively with other laboratory staff members and renders assistance where needed.
  • Reports all incidents, safety hazards, or accidents to appropriate personnel.
  • Respects patient and employee confidentiality.
  • Keeps equipment and work area neat, orderly, and well-stocked.
  • Performs assignments with a minimum of direction and is available to help others.
  • Plans and prioritizes tasks and adjusts to variable workloads.
  • Assesses inventory on a weekly basis and notifies Assistant Supervisor or Supervisor of supply needs.
  • Utilizes hospital's Values as the basis for decision making.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Performs other duties as needed.
