This role involves drawing blood for tests, transfusions, donations, or research. The phlebotomist may explain the procedure to patients and assist in the recovery of patients with adverse reactions. Essential functions include disposing of contaminated sharps and biohazard materials, drawing blood from veins using various methods, and entering patient and billing information into a computer.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • 2yrs or more experience
  • Knowledge of various techniques in collecting specimens.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and OSHA Regulations
  • Ability to maintain absolute discretion over highly sensitive patient information.
  • Talking to others to convey information effectively.
  • Demonstrates proficiency of proper collection methods and proper processing of all specimens.
  • Superior customer service skills, clear communications skills, and ability to show empathy and respect for patients' privacy and autonomy.
  • Knowledge and practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injury to self and patients.

Responsibilities

  • Draw blood for tests, transfusions, donations, or research.
  • Explain the procedure to patients and assist in the recovery of patients with adverse reactions.
  • Dispose of contaminated sharps, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
  • Draw blood from veins by vacuum tube, syringe, or butterfly venipuncture methods.
  • Dispose of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies.
  • Draw blood from capillaries by dermal puncture, such as heel or finger stick methods.
  • Enter patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into computer.
