This position is responsible for verifying positive patient identification to ensure patient safety and assessing patient reactions to specimen procurement. The Phlebotomist performs Venipuncture and collects other specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocol, obtaining medical assistance when judged necessary. They obtain specimens according to priority and scheduled draw times, ensuring completion of specimen collection functions according to protocol. The role also involves ensuring specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing, resolving specimen identification and/or requisition problems, and clarifying requests. Additionally, the Phlebotomist answers and screens telephone calls, assists with inventory, and maintains supplies and/or equipment. They accept specimens from a variety of internal and external customers, receive and sort specimens, and respond to additional specimen procurement requests. The position requires ordering and verifying test requests, documenting appropriate information for quality assurance/improvement, and reviewing various pending and management reports. The Phlebotomist also provides assistance in support of Billing and other business functions and instructs employees and students in phlebotomy and data entry. A key requirement is the ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, understanding growth and development principles and assessing patient status based on age-specific needs.
