About The Position

Physicians East, P.A. is seeking an employee with strong phlebotomy skills and an understanding of preanalytical procedures. Candidates with knowledge of laboratory testing and procedures are preferred. This employee will be responsible for ordering lab tests and performing specimen collection at the assigned Physicians East location. Candidates with strong teamwork and interpersonal skills will excel in this position.

  • High school Diploma or equivalent
  • Two years’ experience performing phlebotomy or completion of a certified phlebotomy program

Responsibilities

  • Enter patient information into the laboratory information system (LIS), enter tests ordered by the physician into the LIS accurately and efficiently. Verify patient demographic information and insurance information match EMR chart and/or encounter form. Review the test order in EMR Link for special instructions or notes from providers. Review test orders for completeness and accuracy. Ensure the order in EMR Link and Orchard Harvest are the same.
  • Perform venipuncture using correct order of draw. Do not attempt venipuncture more than twice. If venipuncture is attempted twice and failed, ask the patient if they would like another phlebotomist to attempt collection. Collect swabs to test for: MRSA, Flu, Strep, and Throat Culture. Initial all samples collected.
  • Distribute 24-hour urine collection kits and stool collection kits with proper instructions and answer questions concerning this collection from patients.
  • Follow workflow: Patient presents to lab with encounter ticket. Locate diagnostic order in EMR Link. Review patient’s pending orders. Remove duplicate orders. Review current orders for special instructions or text from providers. Review orders for accuracy and possible late test additions. Manually add late test additions to the order in Orchard. Select Send to Lab option approving the order to be sent to the LIS.
  • Toggle over to Orchard LIS and locate the patient’s order in the Release Stored Orders Tab. Click on patient name column heading to batch all the patient’s orders together. Review and send the order to the order entry screen by double clicking on the patient’s name. Once the order entry screen is populated, review the order for accuracy and select Save Order. Review Release Stored Orders to ensure all tests have been ordered.
  • Print barcodes for each test ordered. Call patient back to drawing station by the encounter ticket.
  • Verify patient by having patient state their name and date of birth.
  • Perform venipuncture and patient collects urine or another specimen if necessary. Verify patient a second time by having patient state their name and date of birth.
  • Sign all blood collection tubes with initials and send specimens to laboratory through pneumatic tube system.
  • Send or transport collected specimens to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection. If transport is delayed, ensure specimen has been properly stored until transport is available.
  • Ensure all stats are received in the main laboratory within 15 minutes of collection. Communicate with Laboratory Technicians about any samples not obtained or any special instructions.
  • Check on colleagues working at other drawing stations when all patients are drawn at current station.
  • Stock phlebotomy stations as needed. Perform an inventory at least once a week and notify person in charge of ordering supplies when items need to be ordered.
  • Keep work area neat, clean, and disinfected throughout entire shift. Ensure biohazard trash is kept at an acceptable level.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, co-workers, clinical staff, and providers. Apply critical thinking skills during test ordering and specimen collection to ensure accuracy. Communicate with clinical staff, providers, and lab techs.
  • Adhere to department and office policies. Successfully perform or explain all tasks as outlined on the specimen collection evaluation form.
  • Attend compliance and safety classes as offered by Physicians East. Complete annual training as required.
  • Monitor Release Stored Orders daily in Orchard to ensure all orders have been processed.
  • Check Email and Flags in Centricity a minimum of three times a week.
  • Maintain yearly CPR certification.
