About The Position

Phlebotomists are responsible for the drawing, collecting, and handling of all laboratory specimens. Phlebotomists perform a collection of specimens for the following age groups: Newborns, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Senior Adult and Geriatric. The phlebotomist is an OSHA Category I employee, performing tasks which involve exposure to blood and bodily fluids. This position is responsible for providing coverage at multiple locations.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, customer service-oriented position.
  • Repetitive motion, standing, walking, lifting, visual acuity, speaking, writing, reading, kneeling, reaching, turning and bending.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a Phlebotomy or Medical Office Assistant course preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Drawing, collecting, and handling of all laboratory specimens for newborns, pediatric, adolescent, adult, senior adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Providing coverage at multiple locations.
  • Interacting courteously and tactfully with customers and actively seeking their opinions.
  • Demonstrating good communication skills in instructing patients on special collections.
  • Following HIPAA guidelines for confidentiality.
  • Completing assignments in a timely manner.
  • Maintaining a professional attitude and personal appearance.
  • Following all Universal Precautions guidelines.
  • Utilizing all safety equipment (gloves, masks, etc.).
  • Being familiar with Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazard Communications, and Laboratory Safety Manuals.
  • Reviewing the Phlebotomy Manual annually.
  • Following procedures for specimen collection: Venipuncture, Capillary sticks (utilize heel-warmers), Urinalysis, Throat Cultures & Strep, Glucose Tolerances, and First Aid.
  • Handling patients with adverse reactions to venipuncture.
  • Computer proficiency for data entry and data accuracy (Life Points).
  • Registering patients and acting as the receptionist.
  • Using two identifiers before collecting patient specimens.
  • Assuring safety through appropriate specimen labeling.
  • Notifying physicians of critical lab results.
  • Cleaning and organizing the phlebotomy area.
  • Stocking inventory upon delivery and breaking down boxes.
  • Performing additional duties as requested by supervisor.
