About The Position

Responsible for performing proper blood specimen collection by various venipuncture methods. Responsible for superior customer service toward patients, physicians, and clinical staff. Responsible for directing patients on proper collection of other body fluids such as urine or stool. Responsible for correct labeling of all specimen types and sample processing after collection. Responsible for reference sample processing and management. Responsible for inventory of collection supplies. Responsible for performing waived, point-of-care testing at each facility. Responsible for clerical duties as needed to bring each workday to a clean close.

Ability to deliver and/or process specimens in a timely manner.
Ability to collect blood samples in appropriate tubes using appropriate collection devices.
Ability to assist nursing personnel in specimen collection if needed.
Ability to receive and respond to phone calls from nurses, doctors, reference laboratories, and the main downtown lab.
Ability to manage inventories and order supplies.
Ability to demonstrate a positive image of the clinic.
Strong customer service abilities.
Respect for patient record confidentiality and discretion with patient results/matters.
Ability to deal with priorities in an appropriate manner.
Ability to perform work within established laboratory safety and infection control policies and procedures.
Predictable and consistent attendance and punctuality.
Must be able to travel to all HMA middle Tennessee facilities to cover scheduling needs as needed.
Must be available to acknowledge and accept the communication of scheduling needs outside of normal business hours.

Responsibilities

Demonstrates the ability to follow established office and laboratory procedures accurately and precisely.
Organizes work so that patient specimen is drawn with a minimum patient waiting time.
Performs blood collection duties in a timely manner to ensure the availability of test results.
Give appropriate instructions to the patients and performs other specimen collection as requested by the physician
Appropriately labels all patient specimens with patient name, chart number, requesting physician’s name, date and time specimen collected, and name of test required.
Delivers and/or processes specimens in a timely manner (i.e. centrifuges, prepares specimen and paperwork for reference laboratory courier, aliquots and refrigerates for later batch testing, or immediately notifies appropriate testing personnel of STAT requests, etc.)
Collects blood samples in appropriate tubes using appropriate collection devices.
Assists nursing personnel in the collection of specimens if needed.
Receives and responds to phone calls from nurses, doctors, reference laboratories, and the main downtown lab.
Manages inventories and orders supplies.
Always demonstrates, in dealing with the public a positive image of the clinic as a caring and concerned organization.
Understands phlebotomy is a patient-facing position and requires a high degree of strong customer service abilities.
Respects the confidentiality of patient records and uses discretion with discussing patient results/matters.
Demonstrates the ability to deal with priorities in an appropriate manner.
Performs work within the established laboratory safety and infection control policies and procedures, practices, infection control and chemical hazard procedures for the protection of self, patients, and clinic personnel.
Must have predictable and consistent attendance and punctuality.
Must be able to travel to all HMA middle Tennessee facilities to cover scheduling needs as needed.
Must be available to acknowledge and accept the communication of scheduling needs outside of normal business hours.
