About The Position

Under the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Physician, the Phlebotomist and Clinical Laboratory Assistant supports overall laboratory operations, performs phlebotomy, and performs basic and CLIA-waived laboratory testing for use in the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems. In addition, the position contributes to an inclusive and supportive residential environment by delivering equitable, culturally responsive, and student-centered services that enhance the quality of campus life and support student retention and graduation, consistent with the division’s commitment. Requirements

  • A general knowledge of clinical laboratory operations and equipment, including an understanding of, or the ability to quickly learn, laboratory safety and quality assurance practices and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of CLIA-waived testing procedures, methods, and criteria.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology pertinent to laboratory operations.
  • Basic knowledge of applicable laws and regulations pertaining to clinical laboratory operations and patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to collect required specimens for and perform assigned CLIA-waived testing with required attention to accuracy and detail
  • Perform phlebotomy using the appropriate equipment including venipuncture and capillary puncture.
  • Use applicable equipment and materials in performing laboratory tests.
  • Use applicable automated systems for maintaining and tracking laboratories and patient records.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality as required by applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support.
  • Basic computer knowledge, able to use Microsoft Office suite including excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Working knowledge of electronic medical records (EMR) system for patient order verification
  • Complies with HIPAA Health Care Privacy and Security laws
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the department standard operating procedures.
  • Follow all applicable CLIA and OSHA standards
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma required.
  • Six months of related experience in a health care setting required (one year preferred).
  • One year of phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Restricted access laboratory.
  • Must possess and maintain certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, as defined by the California Department of Health Services, which permits the incumbent to perform skin punctures and venipuncture.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a phlebotomist, providing blood draw by skin puncture and venipuncture for clinical analysis and testing.
  • Collect, process and label in-coming and out-going specimens including those specimens sent to the reference laboratory.
  • Clerical functions to include but not limited to; answering the telephone, order entry, scanning reports, completion of forms related to laboratory.
  • Other duties as required, to include but not limited to; restocking, participating in meetings and trainings.
