About The Position

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center is seeking a certified Phlebotomist to join their Phlebotomy department. The role involves identifying patients, using proper techniques for venous or capillary specimen collection, verifying and labeling specimens, and prioritizing and transporting specimens within the stated turnaround time (TAT). The position requires adherence to laboratory and hospital policies regarding safety, universal precautions, and handling of potentially infectious materials. The incumbent may also provide guidance to non-certified phlebotomists, assist with student and new employee orientations, and perform duties in the absence of the Phlebotomy Technical Specialist/Phlebotomy Coordinator.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Phlebotomy certification through ASCP, AMT, NHA, ACA, NPCE or NCCT required
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language
  • Possess knowledge/skill of appropriate blood collection/handling techniques
  • PBT - American Society For Clinical Pathology

Responsibilities

  • Provides direction and guidance for questions and or problems referred by a non-certified phlebotomist concerning specimen acceptability, unusual or difficult draws or related problems
  • Performs accurate and appropriate collection and receipt of specimens in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Follows established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety, fire safety, disasters, exposure, blood borne and airborne pathogens, hazardous materials, and chain of custody procedures.
  • Assists with orientation of laboratory procedures for students and/or new laboratory employees
  • When requested, performs duties required to cover in Phlebotomy Technical Specialist/Phlebotomy Coordinator’s absence
  • Other duties as assigned
