About The Position

This position at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina, within the Phlebotomy Department, focuses on identifying patients, using proper techniques for specimen collection (venous or capillary), and ensuring accurate labeling. The role involves prioritizing and transporting specimens within the specified turnaround time (TAT). The incumbent will also provide guidance to non-certified phlebotomists on specimen acceptability and difficult draws, perform accurate specimen collection and receipt according to laboratory protocols, and adhere to hospital policies regarding universal precautions, safety, and infection control. Additionally, the role may involve assisting with student and new employee orientations, performing duties in the absence of the Phlebotomy Technical Specialist/Phlebotomy Coordinator, and other assigned tasks.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Phlebotomy certification through ASCP, AMT, NHA, ACA or NCCT required
• Possess knowledge/skill of appropriate blood collection/handling techniques
• PBT - American Society For Clinical Pathology

Responsibilities

• Identifies patient, uses good technique to obtain specimen using venous or capillary methods, verifies and labels specimen prior to leaving patient.
• Prioritizes and transports specimens within stated TAT.
• Performs accurate and appropriate collection and receipt of specimens in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Follows established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety, fire safety, disasters, exposure, blood borne and airborne pathogens, hazardous materials, and chain of custody procedures.
• Assists with orientation of laboratory procedures for students and/or new laboratory employees.
• When requested, performs duties required to cover in Phlebotomy Technical Specialist/Phlebotomy Coordinator’s absence.
• Other duties as assigned.
