About The Position

The Phlebotomist I is responsible for safely and efficiently collecting venous and capillary blood samples and a variety of other specimen types from pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients utilizing approved techniques for diagnostic testing. This role ensures proper patient identification, specimen labeling, and adherence to infection control and safety protocols. The incumbent collaborates with nursing, laboratory, and other clinical staff to provide timely and accurate specimen collection, supporting quality patient care and laboratory operations. The Phlebotomist performs other laboratory duties including use of the laboratory computer system, answering phones, receiving patients, communicating laboratory data to ordering parties, maintaining a filing system, and providing data collection support. As needed, the phlebotomist will put in rotation staffing at GRH draw stations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate required or obtain within three (3) months of hire.
  • Phlebotomy certification from an accredited organization (e.g., CPT, NCPT, or ASCP) required.
  • Prior experience in a hospital, clinical, or high-volume laboratory setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collects blood and other specimens from patients using venipuncture, capillary puncture, or other approved methods according to hospital protocols.
  • Verifies patient identity and ensures proper labeling of specimens to maintain accuracy and prevent errors.
  • Maintains patient comfort and safety during specimen collection, addressing patient concerns and minimizing discomfort.
  • Prepares specimens for transport to the laboratory as appropriate, including proper handling, storage, and documentation and distributes samples to designated sections within the department.
  • Enters patient and specimen information and orders accurately into electronic medical records (EMR) or laboratory information systems (LIS) and supports the patient record keeping system for the laboratory.
  • Prepares and maintains equipment and supplies, ensuring proper functioning and replenishment as needed.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, nurses, and laboratory staff regarding specimen collection procedures and any issues.
  • Follows infection control and safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to bloodborne pathogen exposure protocols.
  • Organizes daily work requirements so that patient care is optimized in a cost-effective manner.
  • Performs delegated functions as requested by the Laboratory Manager and in compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and accreditation requirements.
  • May work a flexible schedule or take call, including weekends and holidays, with shifts assigned equitably to meet patient care needs.
