About The Position

Hamilton College, a top-ranked liberal arts college known for its need-blind admission policy and open curriculum, seeks an experienced Philanthropic Officer to join its distinguished Advancement team. This position is an ideal opportunity for a high-performing, versatile, and experienced development professional to join Hamilton’s Advancement team at a pivotal moment as the College prepares for its next comprehensive capital campaign. Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, the Philanthropic Officer carries a portfolio of individual alumni and parent prospects, soliciting prospective donors for six figure gifts. The position will secure both operating, programmatic and endowed gifts, with a focus on increasing giving to capacity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Demonstrated direct fund-raising experience managing major gift prospects, with a track record of closing six figure gifts.
  • At least five years of fundraising or similar constituent management experience.
  • Experience developing donor strategies.
  • Demonstrated results-orientation and a strategic, problem-solving approach to challenges
  • Disposition to take initiative and be a self-starter
  • Ability to work with colleagues effectively
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask, paying close attention to detail while meeting deadlines
  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google suite required
  • Capacity to master new software, especially ascend, and any other Salesforce-based Advancement databases.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a collaborative team environment
  • Experience developing or supporting initiatives that serve underrepresented groups
  • Ability to work well within a fast-paced, high-volume environment
  • Commitment to personal growth and development is highly desirable
  • Ability to work on evenings and weekends during on-campus alumni events.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 150 prospects who have the capacity to make six figure gifts, qualifying, developing and stewarding them to secure, retain, and upgrade operating, programmatic and endowed contributions.
  • Meet or exceed fundraising goals set annually based on portfolio composition and in consultation with Advancement Senior Leadership.
  • Understand and represent the full range of activities at the College and be able to articulate its fundraising priorities
  • Make multiple significant contacts with each assigned prospect throughout the year and conduct personal visits at least annually
  • Evaluate various gift opportunities and giving vehicles and suggest the most suitable for individual donors
  • Develop, write, and present proposals in keeping with the College’s needs and with donors’ interests and financial situations.
  • Work with campus partners to develop opportunities that match donors’ philanthropic interests.
  • Cultivate long-term relationships with donors and prospects, and successfully solicit major gifts
  • Maintain complete and timely records of contacts with donors and prospects
  • Using data analytics tools to track, analyze, and report on dollar growth and development.
  • Work collaboratively with other gift officers on the Development team and colleagues across Advancement.
  • Work with Donor Relations to provide excellent stewardship to donors.
  • In partnership with the Advancement Events and Promotions and Donor Relations teams, plan and execute cultivation and stewardship events for individuals and groups and represent the College at events on and off campus
  • Travel extensively, including with the president, senior staff, and campus partners
  • Other duties as assigned.
