About The Position

Under the general supervision and work direction of the staff pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician performs pharmacy-related functions in compliance with departmental policies and procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care. This role involves delivering medications, maintaining automated dispensing cabinets, performing aseptic compounding, processing requisitions, handling controlled substances, providing assistance to pharmacists, restocking various supplies, packaging medications, and performing miscellaneous duties while adhering to hospital and department guidelines.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Current valid State of Indiana Pharmacy Technician license
  • Current national certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
  • At least 1 year of hospital-based pharmacy experience
  • Maintains qualifications as outlined in the Pharmacy Department Technician Ladder appropriate for a Technician II position.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Delivers medications from the pharmacy to nursing units and returns items from nursing units as required, completing rounds in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Participates in the maintenance and stocking of unit-based automated dispensing cabinets, ensuring accuracy in re-stocking and proper placement of medications.
  • Performs aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures and other sterile dosage forms, following proper aseptic technique and procedures.
  • Processes floor stock/requisitions for nursing units and ancillary areas, accurately filling requisitions, maintaining logs, and removing outdates.
  • Handles controlled substances appropriately, preparing proof-of-use sheets, returning POU sheets, sorting and filing, delivering controlled substances, and picking up expired/unusable controlled substances.
  • Provides general assistance to the pharmacist staff, including order entry, pulling medications, labeling, and answering phone calls.
  • Restocks anesthesia automated dispensing cabinets and other trays and kits, ensuring correct items are placed and documentation is completed.
  • Receives the wholesaler order accurately, places the entire order into stock, rotates stock, and checks off invoices.
  • Correctly and accurately packages bulk medications, maintaining logs and submitting packaging for pharmacist check.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties and follows hospital and department guidelines and policies/procedures, never releasing a medication prior to a pharmacist check.
  • Performs basic tasks of other technician staff during low staff periods.
  • Assists in training new employees and students as requested.
  • Knows and follows hospital and departmental procedures.
  • Projects a professional image for the department.
