About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician assists patients with prescription drop-offs, ensures accurate patient and insurance information is entered into the computer system, and communicates with insurance carriers for payment. They assist the pharmacist in dispensing medications, filling and labeling prescriptions, and communicating with prescribers for new or refill prescriptions. The role involves maintaining pharmacy inventory, completing supply requisitions, answering phones, compounding ointments and creams, pre-packaging medications, and assisting other pharmacy staff. The technician also helps maintain workflow according to pharmacy guidelines, keeps the work area clean, and stays aware of developments in the pharmaceutical field. Marginal duties include assisting with Quality Assurance and Quality Control activities and keeping statistical records.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician Licensure.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Required.
  • Six months previous retail or hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Pharmacy program literacy preferred.
  • Able to type accurately at 35 wpm.
  • Able to do basic pharmaceutical math quickly and accurately.
  • Knowledge of medication brands and generic names.
  • Knowledge of insurance and third-party payment systems.
  • Must have excellent attention to detail.
  • Must be able to multi-task efficiently and effectively.
  • Understanding of medical terminology and calculations.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to effectively communication with a diverse population.

  • Must be able to sit, stand, and or walk for an entire workday.

  • Must be a licensed driver with proof of personal liability and property damage insurance.

Nice To Haves

  • Pharmacy Technician through PTCB or NHA encouraged.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients who are dropping off prescriptions, ensuring all appropriate patient and insurance information is obtained.
  • Ensure patient/insurance profiles are accurate in the computer system and accurately enter prescription information.
  • Communicate with insurance carriers to obtain payment for prescription claims.
  • Assist the pharmacist, under direct supervision, in the practice of pharmacy in accordance with regulations and policies.
  • Assist the pharmacist with filling and labeling prescriptions, and communicate with prescribers for new or refill prescriptions.
  • Verify that the customer receives correct prescription(s) at point of sale and obtains their signature.
  • Maintain pharmacy inventory by checking stock, anticipating medication and supply needs, placing and expediting orders, verifying receipts, and removing outdated drugs.
  • Complete requisitions for supplies and receive incoming orders.
  • Answer phone properly and in a timely manner, respond to routine questions, and refer calls appropriately to the pharmacist.
  • Compound ointments and creams under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Pre-package bulk medications and appropriately label/record keeping for outlying sites.
  • Assist other pharmacy staff as needed.
  • Assist pharmacist in maintaining workflow utilizing current Pharmacy guidelines/standards.
  • Maintain a clean work area utilizing current Pharmacy guidelines/standards.
  • Maintain an awareness of developments in the community and pharmaceutical fields and integrate them into own practices.
  • Conduct Quality Assurance and Quality Control activities under the guidance of the Pharmacy Director.
  • Keep a record of numerous statistical data.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
