About The Position

This position is responsible for a variety of tasks within the pharmacy, including filling medication orders, assisting with inventory management, preparing medications (including IVs and TPNs), operating pharmacy automation, and providing customer service at the pharmacy window. The role requires adherence to USP guidelines for sterile compounding and maintaining a clean work environment. The technician will also assist pharmacists with outpatient prescriptions and operate packaging machines for unit-dose medications. This role involves significant interaction with pharmacy systems, automation, and other healthcare personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Fill new medication orders and cassettes for pharmacist review.
  • Assist in reconciling missing orders and doses, completing required documentation.
  • Deliver and retrieve medications to and from patient care areas.
  • Deliver stock medications to appropriate storage locations on nursing units.
  • Retrieve discontinued and discharged patient medications from nursing units and return them to the pharmacy.
  • Maintain patient transfers, discharges, and medication returns in proper locations.
  • Exchange medication cassettes daily.
  • Complete assigned charging and crediting functions.
  • Prepackage medications for pharmacist review.
  • Restock automated dispensing cabinets (e.g., Acudose machines).
  • Utilize Pharmacy operating systems (e.g., Cerner).
  • Operate and maintain robots for first doses and cart-fill processes.
  • Use the tube system, including secure transaction functions and managing the do not tube list.
  • Stock medications, rotate stock, check for outdates, and assist in maintaining adequate stock levels.
  • Maintain assigned inspection sections and check outdates monthly.
  • Fill emergency trays, anesthesia trays, ancillary department stock requests, and various medication boxes.
  • Facilitate communication within the Pharmacy.
  • Answer telephone and triage calls to the appropriate person.
  • Monitor the Pharmacy Window and assist customers.
  • Staff the IV Room when necessary, after completing department IV training and competency.
  • Prepare IV medications and parenteral nutrition (TPN) utilizing USP 797 and 800 guidelines for review.
  • Label pre-mixed IV medications and batch prepare mini bag plus IV medications for pharmacist review.
  • Manage adequate inventory levels in the Clean Room.
  • Maintain Clean Room environment per policy, procedure, and USP 797 and 800 guidelines.
  • Follow Quality Assurance protocols (e.g., temp/humidity monitoring, hood cleaning, hand washing, proper garb).
  • Demonstrate skill and proficiency for IV shift scheduling on weekends/holidays.
  • Thoroughly understand the cart-fill process, including updates and patient transfers/discharges for the robot.
  • Troubleshoot problems/issues with the robot and Acudose machines.
  • Assist Pharmacist in filling outpatient prescriptions as necessary.
  • Operate packaging machines, including setup, reports, and troubleshooting.
  • Enter appropriate information (NDC, manufacturer, bar-code, lot #, expiration date) for each packaged medication.
  • Achieve average daily production of 2,000 to 3,000 doses from all packaging machines.
  • Anticipate and manage "Robot Ready" stock inventory.
  • Restock the robot daily using the restocking report.
  • Interact with buyers from other campuses to coordinate pre-packaging needs.
  • Maintain bulk supply inventory by placing daily drug orders.
  • Run and maintain packaging log detail reports.
  • Maintain utilization and efficiency of the robot.
  • Use cell map adjustment report twice monthly to manage medication placement in the robot.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
