About The Position

Under the general supervision and work direction of the staff pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician performs pharmacy-related functions in compliance with departmental policies and procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care. This role involves delivering medications, stocking automated dispensing cabinets, performing aseptic compounding, processing requisitions, handling controlled substances, providing assistance to pharmacists, restocking various trays and kits, packaging bulk medications, and performing miscellaneous duties while adhering to hospital and department guidelines. Supplemental responsibilities include assisting other technicians during low staff periods, answering telephones, managing multiple priorities, assisting in training, maintaining professional appearance, and understanding departmental procedures. The position requires decision-making skills, the ability to act independently, respond appropriately under pressure, prioritize responsibilities, and coordinate work activities. Standing or walking will be required on all shifts. All other working conditions described in the technician job description are in force here. This position is classified in compliance with OSHA Risk of Exposure to Bloodborne pathogens scale.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Current valid State of Indiana Pharmacy Technician license
  • Current national certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
  • At least 1 year of hospital-based pharmacy experience
  • Maintains qualifications as outlined in the Pharmacy Department Technician Ladder appropriate for a Technician II position.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers medications from the pharmacy to the nursing units and returns items from the nursing units as required, completing rounds in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Participates in the maintenance and stocking of the unit-based automated dispensing cabinets, ensuring accuracy in re-stocking, correct medication placement, and maintaining correct counts and expiration/beyond-use dating.
  • Performs aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures and other sterile dosage forms, including proper aseptic technique, preparation procedures, labeling, controlled substance records, and visual inspection of parenteral solutions.
  • Processes floor stock/requisitions for nursing units and ancillary areas, accurately filling requisitions, maintaining appropriate logs, ensuring proper stock levels, and entering low stock into the ordering book.
  • Handles controlled substances appropriately, including preparing proof-of-use sheets, returning POU sheets, sorting and filing, delivering controlled substances after pharmacist check, picking up expired/unusable controlled substances, accurately restocking and maintaining counts, and wasting/expiring controlled substances according to procedures and regulations.
  • Provides general assistance to the pharmacist staff, including order entry, pulling medications, labeling, and answering phone calls, resolving issues or triaging to pharmacists as necessary.
  • Restocks anesthesia automated dispensing cabinets and other trays and kits, ensuring correct items are placed, new proof of use sheets are added, and completing documentation. Receives and stocks wholesaler orders accurately, rotating stock and checking off invoices.
  • Correctly and accurately packages bulk medications, ensuring proper packaging, correct labeling, maintained controlled substance logs, and submitting all packaging to the pharmacist for final check.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties and follows hospital and department guidelines and policies/procedures, never releasing a medication prior to a pharmacist check, using appropriate judgment, and organizing time effectively.
  • Performs basic tasks of other technician staff during low staff periods within the boundaries of their training and education.
  • Answers the telephone on the third ring or before using a customer-friendly voice, referring calls to a pharmacist if outside the scope of their license and/or usual responsibilities.
  • Is able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Assists in training new employees and students as requested.
  • Wears clothing that is clean, professional and appropriate and that adheres to the Hendricks Regional Health dress code.
  • Knows and follows hospital and departmental procedures; knows location of hospital and departmental policy/procedure manuals.
  • Projects a professional image for the department.
